The discussion of a remote team agreement is more important now that all families are working together from home. This is a new category of remote work and requires a little more empathy than we could have had in 2017. I hope this conversation will help you and your team empathize with each other, reduce stress, inspect and adapt the way you work, and succeed, whether you use Scrum or not. As I wanted to do SM to facilitate the process, I coached her to create a list of questions for each value, to generate a discussion and to help teams decide on all the „rules“ we should create to ensure that everyone respects that value. We didn`t care where the answers were placed as long as they were captured. The SM asked the questions and collected the answers, while the team voted on the points to be formalized in a working agreement. In this regard, the SM was able to summarize what was most appreciated by the collective team (see Table 2). Whether you work in a scrum team or not, an easy conversation, in which we recognize the new normality of our broader context and the impact it has had on the way we work, shows empathy. This is the story of how I was able to help a team I coached to improve working relationships and work together to achieve better results. While the result of this trip was a series of work agreements that reflect a new way of operating, the story focuses on the team`s journey of self-discovery and self-improvement. Through this trip, the team has gained a better understanding and respect for each other, transcending cultural and geographical boundaries.
Teamwork agreements should describe how team members work together to create a positive productive process. For each team member, the only way to do that is to add their two cents to the development of these policies. The views of all members are important and inclusion is the glue that keeps the agreement in common. We are not in the same context as in 2017. An easy remote team agreement is valuable for a scrum team or team in this area. We can rethink the rules and recognize new charges and loads. For children at home, a little flexibility might help with work schedules. Even the recognition of the existence of the new stress may suffice. The team members determine the working arrangements themselves. The ScrumMaster may have to play the role of facilitating the meeting that is held to conclude labour agreements, but it is the team that decides the agreements. The team also reviews them regularly during retrospective meetings.
Work agreements are the rules/disciplines/processes that the team is ready to follow, without making themselves more effective and simplistic about the self-administered aspects of the Scrum. These agreements help the team develop a common understanding of what it means to work as a team. All sprints should update the labour agreement, often through a retrospective review and a question such as: „Are these still our work agreements? What do we want to update? What are the areas that require new agreements? These agreements have spared me a lot of grief, so I shared below some tips on how to create one that works for your agile team.
